Bike Maintenance day
by admin on Jan.04, 2009, under Uncategorized
Bummer. I hate doing bike maintenance. Well not maintenance but cleaning and the two are closely linked.
Anyway, I got all three active (for active read: not in the loft), bikes out and spleandered them all up. They’re all fairly clean now and all workable which means I can choose any one, at least for the nest three rides. I have to say, while I was doing it all I started wanting to bring the pompino down from the loft to get it in riding order. I’m not sure I have enough wheels mind, or even forks to be honest. Maybe that’s how you figure out just how great you think a bike is. I’m about 95% convinced I’ll ride the chameleon tomorrow though, it’s such a cool bike to ride. It’s not such a great climber but downhill it rocks supreme.
Anyway, my shoulders ache from rubbing and my fingers are still ingrained with dirty oil.

Can you pop round and do mine now please?

I’d expect a constant stream of tea and cakes… and you’d have to expect less than supreme quality.

Trio doesn’t share her cake.
On the maintenance front, I tend to build up a list on a sheet of paper then tackle the whole thing once I’ve got so many knackered bikes it starts to impede my ability to go out for a ride.
It’s anally retentive procrastination or something.
I had a fettling session last weekend – 4 bikes, 5 hours. There’s no heating in the cellar either.

ooh hark at him, a cellar! I’d love a cellar.
I wouldn’t be like you, I’d kit it out with warmth and a workshop and creature comforts like kettles and things. Maybe keep a secret home brew cache in there.
The only poor aspects of a cellar I can conceive would be damp and dragging dirty bikes through the house.
I remember we stayed in a flat for a year in Manchester. We had access to the cellar there which was massive, never used it though.

I rented a place with a cellar, had access from the flat or from outside absolutley brilliant for bike storage/fettling. Wish I’d looked harder for a house with cellar but I dont think theres that many around.
