Pimpino

by on Aug.09, 2009, under Uncategorized

Term coined by Jo.

I finally built up my new bike. A white pompino, tricked out with expensive kit, a lot bloody more expensive than I anticipated too. I *almost* went white everything including white spokes and white chain but that would have been just stupid, thanks to Tim or talking me out of that one.
Forks are Karate Monkey’s, beautiful Cane Creek levers and quite delicious White Industries cranks.

I have to thank On-one/planet-X, Charlie the Bike Monger who was a lot of help at the start, Tim at Sideways Cycles and finally my employers who have elected to make me work just about every weekend going and a lot of nights through the week which has ensured the samuri coffers are overflowing enough to enable blatant frippery like this to go ahead.

And yes, those are white pedals.

Anyway, might as well just let the pictures do the talking. All are clickable.

How does it ride with the longish fork?

    That looks fantastic Jon !
how does it feel compared to a Langster and your Road bike?

I want one but am concerned it is a bit heavy/dull riding ( from comments made by Johann and others)

    Thanks all.
It’s a bit slow with this fork, it has to be said. It’s never going to feel fun pushing it down twisty singletrack. Singular Sam has offered me a different fork if I don’t like this one after a few rides, so we’ll see.

It’s nothing like the Langster. Langsters are very light, very stiff and have extremely crisp steering, proper sprint bikes they are. This feels more like my Lemond road bike did, a bit heavy, but not too much, quite relaxed and lovely to ride over bumpy stuff. I see where Jo and the like are coming from but it’s important to see that it’s just different, not bad. My original Pompino was fantastic, hopefully this will be just as good.

I couldn’t compare this to my current road bike, that’s a carbon/alu mix and is made to have it’s pedals jumped on, it’s like getting kicked up the arse the thing shoots forwards so fast.
