I drew this in ink, it's me by the way.

Now last week I drew this....

Here's my problem. The drawing of me took me all of 90 minutes. And the hardest part for me is always getting the outline…

Ooh blimey, I have been busy. And taken another huge step forwards. For a start off, buy this book if you want to know how to draw things realistically.
Realistic Textures in Pencil Then look at this.

And then I drew this.

Very pleased with this. Made a few small mistakes but no matter, he came out really well. The really fine cross hatching is so draining though, the focus required when doing that and doing it well like on his neck is incredible. I'm immensely pleased with his hair too, I thought that would be terribly difficult but by applying a few smart techniques it came out great.

Cycling Legend number 3 - Bernard Hinault This was lots of fun to draw but I'm disappointed in the final result. The scan wasn't great and I've spent a lot of time since working out what went wrong there. Phil Anderson (in the middle) was a nightmare to draw. I must have tried doing his face four times before I resigned myself to what you see there. The docker who's getting his head kicked in didn't help by turning…

Cycling Legend drawing number 2 - Fausto Coppi. I'm really pleased with this one, especially the shading on his neck and chin. And his shirt collar. Lots of things coming together now. Shading is getting better and I'm getting a much better understanding of how the picture should be built up. Many, many layers, all very gradually built up on top of each other. Tiny, little peices of detail really help too. Hinault…

I watched a video on the internet. It told me I was doing one thing very wrong, and one thing very right with pencil drawings. I started doing the former and drew confidence from the latter and produced this which I'm really, really pleased with. My best pencil drawing so far IMO. Two tiny, simple things. Also, I bought a little makeup brush to smooth out the blending,. that really hepls too, better than a blending stump for those…

I'm quite a fan of Cavendish. There, I've said it. I think he's a hugely focussed and very talented chap. I have no idea why people don't like him. Total winner IMO. Anyway. I sketched him and Haussler going for it. Sketching in ink is very hard. Cock it up and it's done. I cheated a bit and sketched briefely in pencil first. My objective here was to show a contrast between black and white so no shading, just black and white. Not great, Haussler looks better than Cav and I got bored doing the guys in the background. I forgot about Haussler's right foot too. Bikes are so hard to draw, especially at an angle.

It's
here. Entry is a little unusual in that you have to submit a picture of your favourite ride. Right you are then. I figured pretty much everyone would send a photo in and what with artistic desire leaking right out my EARS at the moment, I decided to draw something.

Which I'm quite happy with. Ink is always a bit harder…

I should have realised a lot further through this that it wasn't going to work. It's clear at this stage that it never will. Ho hum.

Still, it's all a learning experience. A few minutes spent on the initial sketch really do make a massive difference when it comes to the end piece. I've spent an hour on my next initial sketch (different picture) and it's still not complete. Much happier with that one. Things learned…

This was an idea I've wanted to draw for a while and then two simultanous art challenges gave me a nudge to get it underway.
So this meets the STW Art Challenge - 10 minute drawing and also the tumblr Weekly Art Challenge - Silhouette. I might try another one for STW though.
